Appleby admits the first major slump of his career demanded something very special.
"My career has generally been on a slow and gradual move up since I turned professional," said Appleby, while preparing for this week's World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, where he met wife Ashley 10 years ago.
"Having a quiet period after a number of good years was a testing time for me.
"I just had to refocus. I was getting pushed out of the majors and the (WGC) events and I wanted to get back to that level.
"I'm certainly more appreciative of my win on Sunday than may be other wins."

Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures is a rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles in 2009 by John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. The group also includes guitarist Alain Johannes during live performances. On November 3, the band gave a free copy of "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)" to fans that had bought tickets to a live performance and offered it on iTunes as a free download. On November 9, Them Crooked Vultures started streaming their full album on their website, and also through a link to their mailing list with the title "Fuck Patience, Let's Dance."

Grohl said in an interview that they are working on a second album that will be "more powerful than the first one". John Paul Jones also stated in an interview while touring in New Zealand that they will be recording a new album, with a likely release date towards the end of 2010. When asked about the futures of Grohl and Homme's bands Jones said that they will get their frontmen back "eventually".
A video was uploaded to the band's official YouTube channel entitled 'Fresh Pots' which NME claimed was filmed during recording for their follow-up album. Grohl clarified after the video's release that it was filmed a year prior, during the self-titled album's recording sessions.

Shark Week

The Discovery Channel's initiative of the Shark Week, which first aired on July 27, 1987, is a week-long series of quality television programs dedicated to sharks. Shark Week is held annually, normally running in July and/or August.

Elliott Sadler experienced the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows at Pocono International Raceway this past weekend. Sadler won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday, driving the GT Vodka Chevrolet Silverado for Kevin and Delaina Harvick. It was a long awaited win for Sadler, who has seen little success in recent years. Like Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Sadler needed a confidence boost, and he got one the same way that Earnhardt did- by stepping down to a lesser series, winning the Nationwide Series race at Daytona last month.

Unfortunately, and also reminiscent of Earnhardt, Sadler's victory on Saturday did not translate to success on Sunday. The first win of the season for Greg Biffle, Roush Racing, and Ford was overshadowed by an incredibly violent crash caused when Elliot Sadler spun trying to avoid Kurt Busch's Penske Miller Lite Dodge. Jimmie Johnson tapped Busch, sending him spinning into the infield. TV viewers saw Busch's crash, the impact hard enough to knock the whole wheel assembly off of the left front.

The cameras missed most of Sadler's wreck, however. All that was captured on video was the impact of Sadler's car with the guardrail, a vivid image of Sadler's body being thrown violently against the seat belt and harnesses. When the crash was ended, the TV cameras focused on a smoking lump on the track apron that turned out to be the engine from Sadler's Richard Petty Motorsports Ford Fusion.

Haven’t we seen this before? A young girl named Monica Wright has to work hard to prove herself on the basketball court. She overcomes a series of obstacles and finally sets foot on the hardwood, having achieved her goal of playing professional basketball.

Most WNBA fans will recognize this as the plot of the 2000 Gina Prince-Blythewood film, “Love and Basketball.” Fast forward a decade. The sequel to “Love and Basketball” began at the 2010 WNBA draft, when the Minnesota Lynx, with the second overall pick, selected, (guess who?) Virginia guard Monica Wright, considered by many to be the hardest working point guard in the draft.

“I was in New York. If you do get invited, you are probably going to go first-round,” Wright said about her Draft Day experience. “I wasn’t sure where I’d go because drafts in the past have been unpredictable. You can’t really guess. I was grateful just to be there, I wasn’t really thinking about where I was going.”

When the Lynx drafted her, she joined the ranks of a team that has two other players with Virginia connections, forward Hamchétou Maïga-Ba (Old Dominion ’02) and center Quanitra Hollingsworth (Virginia Commonwealth ’09).

“Q [Hollingsworth] is actually close to my age and we have a lot of things in common,” Wright said about the Virginia connections. “It’s good to know that someone knows what I’m talking about when I talk of home. We listen to the same type of artists and discuss other basketball players we know from Virginia and she’s someone who knows the area. It’s good to have that in common.”

Her biggest role model is her father, Garry Wright, who served in the U.S. Air Force while she was growing up.

“My Dad was always my best friend my whole life. Usually girls have best friends, like BFFs, but that was my Dad for me,” she said. “I was a military child so I didn’t always get a chance to have a lot of relationships with people. He taught me a lot about sacrifice, giving and selflessness. I’m the exact type of person that he is.”

Regarding the transition from college ball to the professional level, Wright said, “It wasn’t that bad. There is a lot more to learn and a lot of different things you have to maintain, like the different lingo. I’m a pretty intense player already. The speed of play is a little bit quicker, but it didn’t impact me that much. There are just so many different terms, different actions and a lot of new plays to learn. The biggest difference is that you are on your own after practice. It’s like going to work every day.”

Wright started playing soccer and track when she was young, and took basketball seriously when she knew she could get a college scholarship out of it. While playing for Forest Park (Va.) High School, she earned the McDonald’s, USA Today, WBCA and Street & Smith’s All-American status. She was the second-highest ranked guard and 11th overall player in the nation, and took home the Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year honors.

At the University of Virginia, she received numerous ACC and All-America honors, including the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Defensive Player of the Year title.

Leticia Bufoni is Brazilian and is a total monster at ollies and grill. In the competition on Sunday she used mostly the guard grills to score more points and she was very successful with that. Her approach to the lead is really incredible because she doesn’t go for extremely big moves back to back, instead she focuses on doing small ollies, flips and grinds very frequently to score high. This is by far the best strategy any female skater could adopt because most of the time big time hot shot skaters try big moves frequently and fail in one or two of them scoring for mostly just one or two big-air moves every two to three runs. Leticia however, made a lot of runs, including the runs between the short transition periods, and performed short and safe moves occasionally nailing a big Ollie.

Leticia’s win is proof about her strategy and despite the fact that she doesn’t do many high air tricks, she still nailed the competition.

The name Vithoba means Father Vitthala. Vitthala is said to have been derived from the word Vishnu in Kannada. Panduranga is a sanskritized form of Pandarga, the old name of Pandharpur.

Story of Panduranga Vittala

It is said that the devotee Pundalik founded Pandharpur. His father Janudeva and mother Satyavati lived in a thick forest called Dandirvan.

Pundalik was a devoted son but soon after his marriage he began to ill-treat his parents. To escape from this misery, the parents decided to go on a pilgrimage to Kashi. When Pundalik's wife learnt about this, she also decided to go. She and her husband joined the same group of pilgrims on horseback. While the son and his wife rode on horseback, the old couple walked. Every evening when the party camped for the night, the son forced his parents to groom the horses and do other jobs. The poor parents cursed the day they decided to go on a pilgrimage.

Soon the party reached the ashrama of the great sage Kukkutswami. There they decided to spend a couple of nights. They were all tired and soon fell asleep-except Pundalik who could not sleep. Just before daybreak he saw a group of beautiful, young women, dressed in dirty clothes, enter the ashrama, clean the floor, fetch water and wash the swami's clothes. Then they entered the inner room of the ashrama, and came out in beautifully clean clothes and passing near Pundalik, they vanished.



Next night he saw the same sight again. Pundalik threw himself at their feet and begged them to tell who they were. They said they were Ganga, Yamuna and other holy rivers of India in which the Pilgrims bathed and washed off sins. Their clothes became dirty by the sins of the bathing pilgrims.

"And because of your ill-treatment of your parents," they said, "You are the greatest sinner."

This brought about a complete change in him and he became the most devoted son. Now the parents' rode the horses while the son and his wife walked by their side. By their love and affection, the son and his wife urged the parents to give up the pilgrimage and return to Dandirvan.

One day it so happened that Lord Krishna, the King of Dwarka, while feeling lonely, was reminded of his early days in Mathura. He particularly remembered his sports with the milkmaids, the cowherd boys, and his love, Radha. Though she was dead, he longed to see her again. By his divine powers he brought her back to life and seated her by his side. Just then his queen, Rukmini, entered the room. When Radha did not rise to pay her respect, Rukmini left Dwarka in anger and hid herself in Dandirvan forest. After some days, Lord Krishna set off in search of Rukmini. He first went to Mathura, then to Gokul. He met the milkmaids and cowherd boys. They too joined in the search. They went to Mount Govardhan in her search.

At last they reached the banks of the river Bhima in the Deccan. Krishna left his companions at Goplapura, and he himself entered Dandirvan forest alone in search of her. At last he found her and managed to calm her. Krishna and Rukmini came to Pundalik's ashrama.

But at that time Pundalik was busy attending to his parents. Though he knew Lord Krishna had come to see him, he refused to pay his respect to the god before his duty towards his parents was done. He, however, threw a brick outside for lord Krishna to stand upon. Impressed by Pundalik's devotion to his parents, Lord Krishna did not mind the delay. Standing on the brick he waited for Pundalik. When Pundalik came out and begged God's pardon, Lord Krishna replied that far from being displeased, he was pleased with his love for his parents. Lord Krishna then ordered him to worship Vithoba, or God who stood upon a brick.

An imposing temple was built at the place where Krishna and Pundalik had met. Inside the temple stands Krishna's image on a brick. By his side stands the image of Rukmini.This temple covering a vast area has a total of six gates.


The eastern entrance to this temple is known as the Namdev gate (after the great 13th century Vaishnava saint). The sanctum enshrines the standing image of Vithoba also known as Panduranga, Pandhari or Vitthala. Stylistically the image dates back to the 5th century. There are inscriptions in this temple dating back to the 13th century which place origin of this shrine to the 6th century.

Ashadi Ekadasi, also spelt as Ashadhi Ekadashi, is the most important Ekadasi vrata observed as first Ekadashi. It falls on eleventh day in bright half of Ashad Maas. Ashadi Ekadashi 2010 date is July 21. Also popular as Devshayani Ekadashi or Sayana Ekadasi or Harisayani Ekadashi or Harivasara Ekadasi, Ashadi Ekadasi marks the celebration of Pandharpur Palki Yatra in Vithoba Temple in Maharashtra. 17-days long Ashadi Waari Palki Yatra concludes on Ashadi Ekadasi day in Pandharpur Vithal Temple.

As per many legends associated with Ashadi Ekadasi, Lord Vishnu goes on to Yog nidra (cosmic meditation) on this day for four months. These four months holy period is observed as Chaturmas Puja. Sri Maha Vishnu opens his eyes and gets up from the cosmic sleep on Utthana Ekadasi (Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi) which is also popular as Kartik Ekadashi. In Pandharpur Vithoba Temple, Kartik Ekadasi Yatra is another important pilgrimage festival.

Pandarpur Temple

Pandharpur is a town in district Solapur in state of Maharashtra in Western India. It is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra. It is located 65 km west of Sholapur, on the banks of the river Bhima, which is also known as Chandrabhaga. Known as "Sourthern Kashi of India", Pandharpur proudly hosts the "Kuladivat" of Maharashtra State- Shree Vithoba and Rukmini, on the banks of the river.Also known by the other names, Pandurang, Vitthal or Pandhari, it is supposed to be The Supreme God of The Universe for all the Maharashtrians and an incarnation of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. The word Vitthala is derived from the word Vishnu in Kannada. Panduranga is a sanskritized form of Pandarga, the old name of Pandharpur. Pundalik, a saint was closely associated with this shrine, and hence this shrine is also known as Pundarika pura. The worship of Vishnu - Vitthala at Pandharpur is derived mainly from the puranas and has been augmented by the contribution of the great Vaishnava saints of Maharashtra and Karnataka from the 13th through the 17th centuries like Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Sant Eknath, Purandara Dasa, Vijaya Dasa, Gopala Dasa, Jagannatha Dasa, Chokhamela, Janabai and many others.

Although not religiously very crucial, certain daily rituals do form the routine of Bhaghwat Dharma, at Pandharpur. These signify the devotedness of the followers towards its deity. These rituals include Kakad Arati (Early Morning Prayers), Mahapuja (Mega-Worship), Mahanaivedya (Food offering), Poshakh (putting the robe) Dhoop Arati, Padya Pooja, etc. All this is performed in main Vitthal temple. As one enters from Namdeo-Payri (The Step in memory of Saint Namdeo) and comes out of the Westward Exit (the Paschim Dwar) one crosses various other temples- as many as 25, in the same premises, like the Ganesh Mandir, Garud Mandir, Ekmukh Dattatraya Mandir, Satyabhama Mandir, Kanhopatra Mandir to name a few.

At Pandharpur, every Wednesday is regarded as an auspicious day and Ekadashi- auspicious day of the month. Pandharpur hosts four "Yatras" in a year. Out of which "Aashadhi Yatra", Kartiki, Magh and Chaitra Ekadashi`s are celebrated yearly and it thus, attracts the most pilgrims to Pandharpur. Out of these, 1st two attract a crowd of about 8 to 10 lakhs. Here, the palanquins (Palkhis) of various saints from different locations come together at Wakhri, 5 kilometers away from Pandharpur. And then, the pilgrims take holy bath in river Bhima and usually stand in queues 3km long in order to take "Darshana" of Lord Vitthala.

Apart from these, the temple premise also celebrates Gudhi Padawa, Ram-Navami, Dasehara and Deepavali festivals. Even saint Namdev, the 13th century saint was closely associated with this temple. Copper plate inscriptions of the Rashtrakootas place this shrine in the 6th century BC. There is also a shrine to Pundalik at Pandharpur. That is why, Pandharpur is known, the greatest centre of attraction for the masses.

Places of Interest

Pundalika Temple - The Pundalika Temple is about a half km from the Vitthala Temple. This temple marks the spot where Pundalika, the Lord's devotee, spent the last years of his life. It is in the middle of the riverbank.

Vishnupada Temple - The Vishnupada Temple is about a kilometre south of the Pundalika temple. The Vishnupada Temple is in the middle of the river connected by a causeway to the shore. During the rainy season this temple is under water for about three months.In the middle of this temple is a square five feet by five feet. There are three rocks in this square that have the foot-prints of Lord Krishna and of a cow embedded in them. Krishna's footprints are in two positions. In one position He is standing on both feet, and in the other position He is standing on His left foot with His right foot crossed and resting on His toes. There are footprints of a cow at each corner of the square.

On the first day of the month of Margashirsha the sandals of Vitthala are taken to this temple. On the last day of the same month the chariot of Vitthala is brought to this temple in a grand procession. Sraddha is performed at this temple. Pilgrims perform funeral rites here for their departed ancestors.
