Vitthal mandir pandharpur
Vithal, or Vitthal, or Vithoba, or Pandurang (a form of Krishna) is worshipped in some temples in Kerala. Vittala's original temple is at Pandharpur, Maharashtra. It is located 65 km west of Solapur, on the banks of the river Bhimarathi also known as Chandrabhaga. Phandarpur is referred as Pandaripuram by GSBs in Kerala.
The name Vithoba means Father Vitthala. Vitthala is said to have been derived from the word Vishnu in Kannada. Panduranga is a sanskritized form of Pandarga, the old name of Pandharpur.
Story of Panduranga Vittala
It is said that the devotee Pundalik founded Pandharpur. His father Janudeva and mother Satyavati lived in a thick forest called Dandirvan.
Pundalik was a devoted son but soon after his marriage he began to ill-treat his parents. To escape from this misery, the parents decided to go on a pilgrimage to Kashi. When Pundalik's wife learnt about this, she also decided to go. She and her husband joined the same group of pilgrims on horseback. While the son and his wife rode on horseback, the old couple walked. Every evening when the party camped for the night, the son forced his parents to groom the horses and do other jobs. The poor parents cursed the day they decided to go on a pilgrimage.
Soon the party reached the ashrama of the great sage Kukkutswami. There they decided to spend a couple of nights. They were all tired and soon fell asleep-except Pundalik who could not sleep. Just before daybreak he saw a group of beautiful, young women, dressed in dirty clothes, enter the ashrama, clean the floor, fetch water and wash the swami's clothes. Then they entered the inner room of the ashrama, and came out in beautifully clean clothes and passing near Pundalik, they vanished.
Next night he saw the same sight again. Pundalik threw himself at their feet and begged them to tell who they were. They said they were Ganga, Yamuna and other holy rivers of India in which the Pilgrims bathed and washed off sins. Their clothes became dirty by the sins of the bathing pilgrims.
"And because of your ill-treatment of your parents," they said, "You are the greatest sinner."
This brought about a complete change in him and he became the most devoted son. Now the parents' rode the horses while the son and his wife walked by their side. By their love and affection, the son and his wife urged the parents to give up the pilgrimage and return to Dandirvan.
One day it so happened that Lord Krishna, the King of Dwarka, while feeling lonely, was reminded of his early days in Mathura. He particularly remembered his sports with the milkmaids, the cowherd boys, and his love, Radha. Though she was dead, he longed to see her again. By his divine powers he brought her back to life and seated her by his side. Just then his queen, Rukmini, entered the room. When Radha did not rise to pay her respect, Rukmini left Dwarka in anger and hid herself in Dandirvan forest. After some days, Lord Krishna set off in search of Rukmini. He first went to Mathura, then to Gokul. He met the milkmaids and cowherd boys. They too joined in the search. They went to Mount Govardhan in her search.
At last they reached the banks of the river Bhima in the Deccan. Krishna left his companions at Goplapura, and he himself entered Dandirvan forest alone in search of her. At last he found her and managed to calm her. Krishna and Rukmini came to Pundalik's ashrama.
But at that time Pundalik was busy attending to his parents. Though he knew Lord Krishna had come to see him, he refused to pay his respect to the god before his duty towards his parents was done. He, however, threw a brick outside for lord Krishna to stand upon. Impressed by Pundalik's devotion to his parents, Lord Krishna did not mind the delay. Standing on the brick he waited for Pundalik. When Pundalik came out and begged God's pardon, Lord Krishna replied that far from being displeased, he was pleased with his love for his parents. Lord Krishna then ordered him to worship Vithoba, or God who stood upon a brick.
An imposing temple was built at the place where Krishna and Pundalik had met. Inside the temple stands Krishna's image on a brick. By his side stands the image of Rukmini.This temple covering a vast area has a total of six gates.
The eastern entrance to this temple is known as the Namdev gate (after the great 13th century Vaishnava saint). The sanctum enshrines the standing image of Vithoba also known as Panduranga, Pandhari or Vitthala. Stylistically the image dates back to the 5th century. There are inscriptions in this temple dating back to the 13th century which place origin of this shrine to the 6th century.

Ashadi Ekadasi, also spelt as Ashadhi Ekadashi, is the most important Ekadasi vrata observed as first Ekadashi. It falls on eleventh day in bright half of Ashad Maas. Ashadi Ekadashi 2010 date is July 21. Also popular as Devshayani Ekadashi or Sayana Ekadasi or Harisayani Ekadashi or Harivasara Ekadasi, Ashadi Ekadasi marks the celebration of Pandharpur Palki Yatra in Vithoba Temple in Maharashtra. 17-days long Ashadi Waari Palki Yatra concludes on Ashadi Ekadasi day in Pandharpur Vithal Temple.

Known as "Sourthern Kashi of India", Pandharpur proudly hosts the "Kuladivat" of Maharashtra State- Shree Vithoba and Rukmini, on the banks of the river.Also known by the other names, Pandurang, Vitthal or Pandhari, it is supposed to be The Supreme God of The Universe for all the Maharashtrians and an incarnation of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. The word Vitthala is derived from the word Vishnu in Kannada. Panduranga is a sanskritized form of Pandarga, the old name of Pandharpur. Pundalik, a saint was closely associated with this shrine, and hence this shrine is also known as Pundarika pura. The worship of Vishnu - Vitthala at Pandharpur is derived mainly from the puranas and has been augmented by the contribution of the great Vaishnava saints of Maharashtra and Karnataka from the 13th through the 17th centuries like Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Sant Eknath, Purandara Dasa, Vijaya Dasa, Gopala Dasa, Jagannatha Dasa, Chokhamela, Janabai and many others.

In the temple of Vithoba, `Pad-Sparsha-Darshan`, is a special ceremony. Irrespective of caste any devotee can enter the sanctum sanctorum and can place his/ her head at the feet of Vitthal. Although not religiously very crucial, certain daily rituals do form the routine of Bhaghwat Dharma, at Pandharpur. These signify the devotedness of the followers towards its deity. These rituals include Kakad Arati (Early Morning Prayers), Mahapuja (Mega-Worship), Mahanaivedya (Food offering), Poshakh (putting the robe) Dhoop Arati, Padya Pooja, etc. All this is performed in main Vitthal temple. As one enters from Namdeo-Payri (The Step in memory of Saint Namdeo) and comes out of the Westward Exit (the Paschim Dwar) one crosses various other temples- as many as 25, in the same premises, like the Ganesh Mandir, Garud Mandir, Ekmukh Dattatraya Mandir, Satyabhama Mandir, Kanhopatra Mandir to name a few.
At Pandharpur, every Wednesday is regarded as an auspicious day and Ekadashi- auspicious day of the month. Pandharpur hosts four "Yatras" in a year. Out of which "Aashadhi Yatra", Kartiki, Magh and Chaitra Ekadashi`s are celebrated yearly and it thus, attracts the most pilgrims to Pandharpur. Out of these, 1st two attract a crowd of about 8 to 10 lakhs. Here, the palanquins (Palkhis) of various saints from different locations come together at Wakhri, 5 kilometers away from Pandharpur. And then, the pilgrims take holy bath in river Bhima and usually stand in queues 3km long in order to take "Darshana" of Lord Vitthala.
Apart from these, the temple premise also celebrates Gudhi Padawa, Ram-Navami, Dasehara and Deepavali festivals. Even saint Namdev, the 13th century saint was closely associated with this temple. Copper plate inscriptions of the Rashtrakootas place this shrine in the 6th century BC. There is also a shrine to Pundalik at Pandharpur. That is why, Pandharpur is known, the greatest centre of attraction for the masses.
Places of Interest
Pundalika Temple - The Pundalika Temple is about a half km from the Vitthala Temple. This temple marks the spot where Pundalika, the Lord's devotee, spent the last years of his life. It is in the middle of the riverbank.
Vishnupada Temple - The Vishnupada Temple is about a kilometre south of the Pundalika temple. The Vishnupada Temple is in the middle of the river connected by a causeway to the shore. During the rainy season this temple is under water for about three months.In the middle of this temple is a square five feet by five feet. There are three rocks in this square that have the foot-prints of Lord Krishna and of a cow embedded in them. Krishna's footprints are in two positions. In one position He is standing on both feet, and in the other position He is standing on His left foot with His right foot crossed and resting on His toes. There are footprints of a cow at each corner of the square.
On the first day of the month of Margashirsha the sandals of Vitthala are taken to this temple. On the last day of the same month the chariot of Vitthala is brought to this temple in a grand procession. Sraddha is performed at this temple. Pilgrims perform funeral rites here for their departed ancestors.

In the temple of Vithoba, `Pad-Sparsha-Darshan`, is a special ceremony. Irrespective of caste any devotee can enter the sanctum sanctorum and can place his/ her head at the feet of Vitthal. Although not religiously very crucial, certain daily rituals do form the routine of Bhaghwat Dharma, at Pandharpur. These signify the devotedness of the followers towards its deity. These rituals include Kakad Arati (Early Morning Prayers), Mahapuja (Mega-Worship), Mahanaivedya (Food offering), Poshakh (putting the robe) Dhoop Arati, Padya Pooja, etc. All this is performed in main Vitthal temple. As one enters from Namdeo-Payri (The Step in memory of Saint Namdeo) and comes out of the Westward Exit (the Paschim Dwar) one crosses various other temples- as many as 25, in the same premises, like the Ganesh Mandir, Garud Mandir, Ekmukh Dattatraya Mandir, Satyabhama Mandir, Kanhopatra Mandir to name a few.
At Pandharpur, every Wednesday is regarded as an auspicious day and Ekadashi- auspicious day of the month. Pandharpur hosts four "Yatras" in a year. Out of which "Aashadhi Yatra", Kartiki, Magh and Chaitra Ekadashi`s are celebrated yearly and it thus, attracts the most pilgrims to Pandharpur. Out of these, 1st two attract a crowd of about 8 to 10 lakhs. Here, the palanquins (Palkhis) of various saints from different locations come together at Wakhri, 5 kilometers away from Pandharpur. And then, the pilgrims take holy bath in river Bhima and usually stand in queues 3km long in order to take "Darshana" of Lord Vitthala.
Apart from these, the temple premise also celebrates Gudhi Padawa, Ram-Navami, Dasehara and Deepavali festivals. Even saint Namdev, the 13th century saint was closely associated with this temple. Copper plate inscriptions of the Rashtrakootas place this shrine in the 6th century BC. There is also a shrine to Pundalik at Pandharpur. That is why, Pandharpur is known, the greatest centre of attraction for the masses.
Places of Interest
Pundalika Temple - The Pundalika Temple is about a half km from the Vitthala Temple. This temple marks the spot where Pundalika, the Lord's devotee, spent the last years of his life. It is in the middle of the riverbank.
Vishnupada Temple - The Vishnupada Temple is about a kilometre south of the Pundalika temple. The Vishnupada Temple is in the middle of the river connected by a causeway to the shore. During the rainy season this temple is under water for about three months.In the middle of this temple is a square five feet by five feet. There are three rocks in this square that have the foot-prints of Lord Krishna and of a cow embedded in them. Krishna's footprints are in two positions. In one position He is standing on both feet, and in the other position He is standing on His left foot with His right foot crossed and resting on His toes. There are footprints of a cow at each corner of the square.
On the first day of the month of Margashirsha the sandals of Vitthala are taken to this temple. On the last day of the same month the chariot of Vitthala is brought to this temple in a grand procession. Sraddha is performed at this temple. Pilgrims perform funeral rites here for their departed ancestors.

Chrissy Steltz
Chrissy Steltz was 16 years old in March 1999 when her face was blasted away by a shot gun. Steltz’s friend had accidentally fired the shotgun which hit her face. Steltz’s face was totally destroyed and her injuries were severe.
Steltz and her friends had a party in 1999. Her friend accidentally fired a shotgun and the pellet blasted away Steltz’s face. Alcohol was said to have been a contributing factor in the accident.
Steltz lost her eyesight, cheeks and nose. After about 10 years, doctors have created a prosthetic face for Steltz. This special face for Steltz will give her prosthetic eyes, eyelashes, nose and cheeks. This face will be crewed on to her titanium dental implants. Steltz has no sense of sight, smell and taste. Steltz is a survivor. She remains strong. Steltz is not bitter about her accident. She has tried to be appreciative of what she has.
Steltz has a new baby who is 2 months old. He’s named Geoffrey Dilger Jr. Steltz said her baby is her proudest achievement so far.
Chrissy Steltz, 27, will get a silicon mask with glass eyes and a nose. The mask will be attached to her face via magnets on dental implants, which are drilled into the remaining bones in her face. Ms Steltz won’t need to use a sleep shade to hide the upper portion of her face.
This means Chrissy’s son will see his Mom’s face without her former mask.
The surgery for Chrissy Steltz is a cosmetic procedure and won’t be covered by insurance. Steltz is getting her $20,000 surgery done because the doctors are donating their time.

Sandra Vergara, who is more recognizable as the sister of the "Modern Family" star, Sofia Vergara, is included in the cast list for the upcoming remake of the 1980s horror cult classic of the same name.
Sandra Vergara has joined the cast of the upcoming DreamWorks project, which will be directed by Craig Gillespie.
The character that Sandra Vergara will be playing in the upcoming "Fright Night" will be of girlfriend and assistant to magician, David Tennant. Other actors of the new movie are going to be Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Imogen Poots, and Toni Collette.
David Tennant will play as "Peter Vincent", rival for Anton Yelchin, the vampire. Sandra Vergara will be playing the assistant, who is reluctantly hired by David Tennant to fight off the vampire.

I Write Like
For the past few days, the web has been buzzing about a new website called that will analyze your writing and tell you which famous author you write like. The site encourages anyone to paste in a few paragraphs from a blog, term paper, book, or anything else, and it will tell you whether you're a James Joyce or a Dan Brown.
So far, people have gotten mixed results from the analyzer. Over at the New Yorker's Book Bench blog, Madeleine Schwartz says, "According to the machine, an invitation to a birthday party was worthy of a comparison to James Joyce; an excerpt from a term paper on Renaissance literature, though, more closely resembled Dan Brown's fiction."
The funniest result so far must be what Margaret Atwood got when she tried out the tool. Atwood, whose name is one of the results that users can get, on July 13, "According to the I Write Like analysis, I write like... Ta da! Stephen King! Who knew?"
Later on, a developer for the site to Atwood over Twitter: "Creator of IWL here. Apparently, we need to train our database w. more of yr work, so it can recognize you:-)"

Inception Explained
Christopher Nolan really likes to mess with people’s heads, and his new movie is no exception. The movie is extremely complicated and somewhat like Matrix. You need to see it several times before you begin to get a glimmer of understanding. There’s just so much going on!
The Inception ending, however is definitely ambiguous. Nolan apparently did not know how to end his own movie! The film leaves us with the image of Leonardo’s totem spinning on the table, which could mean he is still in the dream and maybe even in limbo. Then the credits cut in and we never get to know if he comes out or not.
SPOILER ALERT — DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE
Several theories are being bandied about the Internet. One theory is that Leonardo stays in the dream to find Saito, wakes him up, and they somehow hook up with Michael Caine and live happily ever after with the kids. Yeah, right.
The other more plausible theory is that Leonardo was actually in a dream through the whole movie! The thoughts of his wife were the result of her trying to pull him out of the dream. This is why he keeps spinning the top, to see if he’s in reality or not. At the end when the top works for him, it’s because he has let her memory go and given in to the idea that he was in a dream. Only then would he be able to wake up and leave the dream, and rejoin his wife.
Lena Headey
English actress Lena Headey was born on October 3, 1973 in Bermuda, where he father, a police officer, was assigned. Her family returned to their hometown of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire when she was eight years old. She started her interest in acting while studying at Shelley College, and got her big break at age 17, when she was spotted in a school production that was held at the Royal National Theatre in London. She was cast as the young Mary, appearing opposite Jeremy Irons in the 1992 film Waterland.

Linda Dolloff
The ABC News show "20/20" plans to broadcast a story on the Linda Dolloff attempted murder case on Friday night's program.
Dolloff, a 48-year-old Standish yoga instructor, was convicted in May of trying to kill her estranged husband, Jeffrey Dolloff, with a baseball bat then shooting herself to make it look like a robbery.
Linda Dolloff said she had no animosity toward her husband even though they were getting a divorce and he was planning to have another woman stay at their house. She said the two had drinks in the hot tub and had sex before going to bed in separate rooms the night of the attack.
Jeffrey Dolloff said he remembers nothing of the attack.
Linda Dolloff is weighing whether to appeal the conviction and has not yet been sentenced.
The hour-long "20/20" program was reported by correspondent Jim Avila, who interviewed both Dolloffs, according to ABC News. The reporter also interviewed Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson, Dolloff's attorney Daniel Lilley, and police investigators.

Website Promotion: Big Is Not Always Better
Well-known internet sites might seem like the obvious location for people working in website marketing and website promotion to place a brand online, but new research suggests big may not always be better.
A new study by Addvantage Media reveals there has been a 40 per cent decline in people paying attention to ads on major portal sites compared with last year.
However, as Louise Jack writing for Marketing Week reports, that doesn't mean internet users are ignoring website promotion altogether.
Addvantage Media's annual Online Advertising Report for 2010, which polled 2,232 British internet users with YouGov, showed that consumer responsiveness to adverts on large websites, such as MSN, Tiscali and Yahoo!, has shown a marked reduction since early 2009.
But, Ms Jack suggests, this is because brands are placing too much stock within the reach of generic portal sites.
The research found that 88 per cent of internet users rarely or never pay attention to adverts displayed on these big portal sites.
Meanwhile, only one in ten claims to pay attention to adverts displayed all or some of the time.
This is a reduction of 40 per cent since last year's edition of the study, in which 37 per cent of respondents claimed to pay attention to these types of adverts.
Addvantage Media managing partner Edward Tijdink says he was expecting a decline in the number of people who pay attention to ads on large portals but admits he is surprised by the 40 per cent reduction.
Mr Tijdink suggested the figures revealed internet audience were 'growing up'.
"Think of your own internet experience; perhaps you started off surfing the generic portals, then moved on to investigate special interest sites," he said.
"The more the internet has grown up, the more you'd expect people to do that."
One way to get around the problem is to try experimenting with new methods of website marketing.
According to eMarketer, online video advertising will become an increasingly popular marketing channel in 2010 as demand for video advertising networks and video on demand (VOD) grows.
For example, the UK-based online video advertising network, Web TV Enterprise, has reported a four-fold increase in demand for online video advertising over the past year.

Men Prefer Bad Girls,true?
This post was triggered off by something I heard on the radio last evening on my way back home. A lot has been said and many a storm has brewed over several cups of tea and coffee on what men and women want – not just in terms of each other or in a relationship, but in general. And, I for one, don’t have an answer yet. Don’t think any one of either sex does. There’s way too much oestrogen and testosterone on television for anybody’s good to make such a decision.
But to return to the discussion on radio, that, in turn, led to this post – do men prefer bad girls? Now this is as random as it can get, considering we’re not defining the term ‘bad’. Sundry men called in to say they’d prefer ‘bad girls’ because they’re ‘more fun’.
Yeah sure! And might I ask, what their idea of ‘fun’ is? The excitement and thrill of doing ‘naughty’ things that ‘stuck-up’, ‘good girls’ wouldn’t do, like taking off on a bike to an unknown destination till the cops come after you? They say they get along better with the ‘bad girls’ — you know “great minds think alike” and all that; they’re an impulsive lot, don’t care much for a relationship and yet give the boys a good time. Whatever their idea of ‘fun’, this lot of men believe only ‘bad’ girls are good for them, as the cliche goes.

Then there is the shameless lot that prefers a ‘bad girl’ as a girlfriend but would like a ‘good girl’ for a wife. And that’s the quintessential middle-class Indian guy for you. They desire the undesirable, they hanker for the forbidden fruit but when it comes to making choices, Mommy dearest will pick the ripest, prettiest, can’t-say-no-to fruit of the lot. They are the hypocrites who want the best of both worlds. And then as my colleague Tarun says: “Mature men don’t go for ‘bad girls’.” These are the ones that give gyaan on ‘responsibility’ and such like when they talk of ‘settling down’.

Maybe it’s time they think beyond just sport (no, I don’t mean football) – the good, the bad and the ugly part of it. Be the metrosexual man and own up, step out of the closet and talk about what you really like about the ‘bad girls’ apart from the ‘fun’ part of it.
